Motorists using the Kampala Northern Bypass should expect traffic disruptions for the next six months as major maintenance works begin on December 28, 2024. The project will focus on the 21-kilometre stretch between the Kisaasi and Busega interchanges.
General Edward Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport, explained that the maintenance will involve removing old asphalt, reprocessing the road base, and applying a new asphalt overlay. To facilitate this, sections of the bypass will be fully closed, with traffic diverted to opposite lanes.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes to minimize delays, and the Uganda Police Force, in collaboration with Stirling Civil Engineering and the Ministry, will manage the diversions.
This initiative follows the merger of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) with the Ministry of Works and Transport, with the Ministry now overseeing the bypass's maintenance. Gen Katumba urged road users to be cautious and plan for increased travel times.
The Northern Bypass, opened in 2009, remains crucial in easing Kampala's congestion, and this maintenance is essential for preserving its functionality. Authorities are committed to completing the works on time with minimal disruption.
